BART’s opening day of revenue passenger service - September 11, 1972 - introduced the A and B Cars to the San Francisco Bay Area. Manufactured by the aerospace company Rohr in Chula Vista, CA in the late 1960s, the interiors of the original BART cars expressed that classic 1960s aesthetic with faux wood paneling and sponge-padded wool carpet.
A Cars have the iconic slanted end for the lead car with the operator’s cab and can be used at the end of the train. They have automatic train operating equipment and two-way communications system.
